Environmental Management Systems
(EMS, ISO 14001)
We
all have an impact on the environment we are more aware and concerned
about the future of our world. We are encouraged to use sustainable
energy resources, our cars use “green fuel” and we are
rewarded through reduced Road fund licences for driving cars with
smaller engines. Our household rubbish is separated into bottles,
cans, paper and ‘compostibles’ etc. We are encouraged
to use recycling facilities to use energy efficient items such as
light bulbs. In our daily lives the environmental impact we
have is continuously highlighted to us.
Businesses are in the forefront in what
they can and cannot do to protect the environment. Protecting
the environment is a high priority for businesses. Companies who
get rid of their waste indiscriminately are the exception now due
to the law.
QA Management has extensive experience
with the impacts that individual businesses can have on the
environment, from small office-based companies to large factories
with complex processes.
The Standard ISO 14001
is about trying to reduce the impacts that an organisation has on
our environment and Environmental Management Systems are designed
to assist. The control of energy usage and the control of
waste are two fundamental requirements for an Environmental management
system. The adoption of reducing them can lead to increases
in efficiencies within an organisation
ISO 14001 and EMAS
The most widely used EMS
in the UK is ISO 14001. ISO
14001:1996 Environmental Management System
was designed in response to rising concern about the effect
our activities and businesses were having on the world.
ISO 14001 shares the same management system
principles with ISO 9001, and existing systems developed for ISO
9001 can form a basis for environmental management. Furthermore
it is compatible with the European Community’s
Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).
